Advancing Smart Meter Testing in Egypt

On January 15, 2025, Infinity Egypt, in collaboration with its German technology partner ZERA, held a specialized technical workshop at the headquarters of the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company in the New Administrative Capital.

The event brought together engineers and technical specialists from the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company and electricity distribution companies to explore the latest technologies, systems and testing methodologies for smart electricity meters.

The workshop was delivered with the participation of a ZERA smart metering expert and reflected the long-standing cooperation between Infinity Egypt, ZERA and Egypt’s electricity sector.

Supporting the Modernization of Meter Testing Laboratories

As Egypt continues to expand its smart metering infrastructure, electricity meter laboratories must develop beyond conventional accuracy and calibration testing.

Modern smart meters require comprehensive validation of their communication capabilities, functional performance, data integrity, security and ability to operate within connected utility systems.

The workshop presented advanced solutions designed to support the current and future requirements of meter laboratory engineers, electricity distribution companies and the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company.

Key Technical Topics

The technical sessions covered several important areas related to smart meter testing, including:

The presentations demonstrated how modern testing systems can validate not only measurement accuracy, but also the complete functional and communication performance of smart electricity meters.

Introducing the Modular STM4000 Testing System

A key part of the workshop focused on ZERA’s STM4000 Stationary Test Module, a modular and cost-efficient solution developed for testing different types of electricity meters.

The system supports a variety of communication and metrological interfaces, including RS485, RS232, M-Bus, S0, infrared and PLC communication. It is designed to perform both functional and communication tests while supporting different DLMS/COSEM security levels and encrypted communication.

Practical testing examples included tariff structure verification, energy and demand register testing, event recording, tamper simulation and meter labeling validation.

More Than Two Decades of Technical Cooperation

Infinity Egypt has supplied more than 80 stationary meter calibration systems manufactured by ZERA to electricity distribution companies across Egypt. Several of these systems have remained operational since 2000, reflecting the reliability of the technology and the strength of the technical support provided by Infinity Egypt.

The attendance of engineers and specialists from across Egypt’s electricity sector demonstrated the importance of knowledge sharing and continuous technical development in preparing laboratories for the transition toward smarter, more connected energy networks.

Continuing Our Commitment to Egypt’s Electricity Sector

This workshop forms part of Infinity Egypt’s ongoing commitment to supporting the modernization of Egypt’s electricity measurement and testing infrastructure.

Through its partnership with ZERA, Infinity Egypt continues to provide advanced international technologies, specialized technical expertise and long-term local support to help electricity companies meet the evolving requirements of smart metering and digital energy management.
