Exploring the Future of Energy-Meter Testing
Next-Generation Testing Software
The first technical session examined the evolving software requirements of modern testing laboratories. It included a practical demonstration of a new meter-testing device operating with WinSAM 8, alongside an industry-focused discussion on the future expectations of testing software.
A central highlight was the presentation of WebSAM, ZERA’s next-generation software platform. The session introduced its architecture, potential applications and key design principles, demonstrating how the platform is being developed to support more connected, flexible and future-ready testing environments.
Advanced Testing Solutions for E-Mobility
The conference also addressed the rapid development of electric-vehicle charging infrastructure and the corresponding need for reliable testing and verification solutions.
The session began with an overview of the standards and regulatory requirements governing charging-infrastructure testing. This was followed by a presentation of the E-MOB 750, ZERA’s solution for testing DC charging stations, as well as concepts for battery simulation using a controllable load and phantom-power technology.
Developments in DC Testing and Metering
Another key area of discussion was the growing importance of DC meter production and testing, particularly as green-energy and e-mobility applications continue to expand.
ZERA presented its MTS7xx solutions for DC meter production, highlighting the need for testing systems capable of supporting the anticipated increase in DC-meter deployment across emerging energy applications.
The Evolution of Smart-Meter Testing
The conference highlighted how smart-meter testing has evolved significantly in response to increasingly connected electricity networks.
Traditionally, meter testing focused primarily on the accuracy and precision of energy measurement. The industry then progressed towards validating communication protocols and data integrity. Today, successful smart-meter deployment also requires comprehensive communication, functional and system-level validation.
By evolving from conventional metrological testing to protocol and end-to-end system validation, ZERA continues to address the changing technical requirements of modern smart-metering infrastructures.

End-to-End Smart-Metering System Validation
Modern smart-meter testing must evaluate the entire communication and data chain rather than assessing the meter as an isolated device.
The conference demonstrated the importance of validating communication between the:
Smart Meter → Data Concentrator Unit → Head-End System → Meter Data Management System
This approach represents a transition from individual device testing to complete system validation, helping utilities confirm that all components can communicate and operate reliably within a unified smart-metering environment.
Multi-Dimensional Testing Capabilities
The sessions also explored the multiple technical dimensions that must be evaluated when testing modern smart meters, including:
- Measurement accuracy and communication performance.
- Load-switch operation and cybersecurity.
- Firmware upgrades.
- Interoperability and interchangeability.
- Boundary-condition and stress testing.
Together, these tests provide a more comprehensive assessment of smart-meter performance under both normal and challenging operating conditions.
